Civic Engagement & Voting Rights: Adding Values to a Vibrant Community

Great Wall Center's board updated its mission to focus on  "community change" in 2007. Having served as a hub of empowerment, learning and networking for the unserved and underserved Asian residents in the past decade, Great Wall Center has transformed and will continue to become an anti-racist grassroots entity that aims to challenge structural barriers in the local community in the Malden area.

Despite funding constraint in recent years, Great Wall Center continued its presence in the community through ongoing support to the Malden Asian Pacific American Coalition and the MADAC Parent Association; working with its community allies, such as TriCAP, Malden High School and UMass Boston, and exploring issues of concern that need a response in Malden.

Great Wall Center has begun to collaborate with the Salem State College School of Social Work for the first time by working with its student intern and looking into an important aspect of civic life of the Asian American residents in Malden. Ms. Ji Youn Lee, an MSW candidate of the Salem State College and a Malden resident, has been a lead organizer of the first Malden based voting rights initiative.

The project aims to follow up with the results of an exit poll survey by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund which found that there has been a lower voter registration rate and turnout to polls during recent elections. The Great Wall Center/Malden Asian Pacific American Coalition Voting Rights Projects aim to serve seniors, youths and familie challenges by language and cultural barriers accessing the electoral process and in the polling places. The project does not discriminate against difference of ability, race, class, sex, religion, sexual orientation or nationality.

Participatory Democracy In Malden--A Grassroots Look Into the Issues, Challenges and Opportunity---a community forum coming soon!

A Planning committee is being formed to prepare for the first Voting Rights Conference in the late winter of 2010. Civic leaders of all background are welcome to participate in this important community change process that enhances life skills of all under-represented residents in Malden.
